TURA, Dec 14: The Achik Conscious Holistically Integrated Krima (ACHIK) has come out in strong opposition to the demand for a minority council raised by certain sections from the plain belt of the Garo Hills.
In a statement issued on Sunday, ACHIK members termed the demand divisive, unconstitutional and detrimental to the rights of the Garo tribe, which already functions under the special provisions of the Sixth Schedule that recognise the autonomy, identity and self-governance of the tribal population.
“Any attempt to carve out a minority regional council within this framework is not only impractical but a direct challenge to the spirit and purpose of the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution,” felt the organisation.
They described the demand as politically motivated, designed to create communal tension and aimed at fragmenting the social harmony of the people of the region.
“Such irresponsible demands threaten the peace, unity and territorial integrity of the Garo community, and we urge people to refrain from spreading misinformation that could destabilise the region for personal or political gain,” said the organisation.
