SHILLONG, Dec 16: The Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Pynursla Civil Sub-Division, E.L. Warjri, has issued a prohibitory order under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) to curb pollution of water bodies feeding the Umngot River.
Effective immediately, the order prohibits individuals and entities from dumping waste, sewage, plastics, chemicals, construction debris, or any other pollutants into rivers, streams, ponds, and drinking water sources. Washing of vehicles, clothes, or equipment in these water bodies is also strictly banned, along with the discharge of industrial or commercial effluents.
The SDM said the directive aims to safeguard public health, protect aquatic life, and ensure environmental sustainability. The order specifically cited the tributaries of the Umngot River as vital ecological resources under threat from unchecked pollution.
Authorities have warned that violations will attract strict action, underscoring the administration’s commitment to preserving the pristine condition of the Umngot and its tributaries.
