Guwahati, Dec 17: In a moving tribute to Assam’s beloved cultural icon Zubeen Garg, a life-size statue of the legendary musician has been unveiled today at the
campus of The Assam Royal Global University (RGU).

The statue was inaugurated by Prof. Pradip Acharya—eminent poet, translator, academic, and critic of Assamese and English Literature—in the august presence of Chancellor Dr. A.K.
Pansari, Vice Chancellor Prof. A.K. Buragohain, and Prof. Amarjyoti Choudhury, Chair
Professor of the Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Centre for Creativity at RGU, Prof. Dhrubajyoti Borah,
Advisor to Chancellor RGU, Lakhyajit Bora—the sculptor of the 10 feet tall statue, alongside
Zubeen Garg’s sister Dr Palme Borthakur, distinguished delegates, faculty, staff, and students, according to a Press release.
Welcoming the gathering, Prof. (Dr.) Amarjyoti Choudhury said, “To us the statue appears
like a poem in bronze. I am sure it will inspire one and all to pursue the ideals the legend
pursued.”
In his address, the chief guest Prof. Pradip Acharya said that Zubeen Garg represented the
rare confluence of art, conscience, and courage. Describing the musician as “the wanderer”
he observed that Zubeen’s music was deeply rooted in the soil of Assam while resonating far beyond its geographical boundaries, giving voice to human emotions, social concerns, and the collective aspirations of the people. He lauded Royal Global University for
institutionalising remembrance through art and scholarship.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. A.K. Pansari said: “Zubeen Garg is not just a musical genius
but an emotion for the people of Assam. His immense contributions to art, culture, and
humanity will continue to inspire generations. This statue at Royal Global University stands
as a symbol of our enduring respect and remembrance for his extraordinary legacy.”

The programme featured a heartfelt musical tribute in saxophone by Shri Sanjeev Rabha
while Susanta Chowdhury sang few of Zubeen Garg’s songs evoking deep emotions among
all present.

It could be mentioned that on 18th November 2025, RGU had paid a soulful tribute to
Zubeen Garg by launching a commemorative book titled “Zubeen: Twenty Songs and Seven
Portraits”, instituting a scholarship, and unveiling a memorial titled “Zubeen: The Road, the
Music, the Life Perspectives” in honour of the legendary artist. The event coincided with the
birth anniversary of the heartthrob.

Through these tributes, Royal Global University honours a legend whose voice, vision, and
versatility enriched the cultural fabric of Assam and left an indelible mark on millions.
