SHILLONG, Dec 18: Eminent artist Dr Janak Jhankar Narzari on Thursday inaugurated the Thoh Shun Art Camp at the scenic Moopynïieñ Heritage Campsite, Krangshuri, Amlarem. Eight artists from the Riti Academy of Visual Arts and the Santiniketan Kala Bhavan Practoni are participating in the event.
Addressing a gathering, Dr Narzari, who is a former principal of Kala Bhavan, Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan, spoke at length on the importance of regular interactive sessions and exchange programmes between the two institutions.
Recalling his association with Meghalaya, he referred to an art camp held at Sohra in 2006 and expressed deep appreciation for the state’s serene and vibrant landscape, describing it as a powerful source of inspiration for visual arts. He noted that lack of adequate art institutions has not deterred local aspirants who have continued to excel in their education and professional careers. The welcome address was delivered by Rembbrandt I Kharnaior. Raphael Warjri chaired the inaugural session.
Warjri reflected on Khasi philosophy and its egalitarian cultural ethos, as articulated by renowned Khasi bard Soso Tham. The participants paid rich tributes to the poet laureate on the occasion of his death anniversary.
The Thoh Shun Art Camp will conclude on December 24. The artworks created during the camp will be exhibited to mark Kiang Nangbah Day, culminating on December 30, to pay homage to one of the greatest freedom fighters of the state.
During an informal interaction, the participating artists shared their impressions of the unique art camp, being hosted by the Riti Academy of Visual Arts.
The programme is supported by the NEEPCO Ltd, along with other well-wishers. It includes a commitment for continued engagement through the Arts and Culture Department of the state government and the INTACH Meghalaya Chapter.
