London, Dec 18: Former England captain Michael Vaughan has advised against sweeping changes to England’s playing group, even if their Ashes campaign in Australia ends in another defeat.
Ben Stokes’ side are staring at an early series loss after sliding to 213 for eight on the second day of the third Test in Adelaide, trailing Australia by 158 runs. A defeat would hand England a fourth successive Ashes series loss on Australian soil and extend their winless run in the country to 18 Tests.
Historically, heavy Ashes defeats away from home have prompted major restructuring within English cricket. Vaughan, however, believes patience and continuity are key, drawing on his own experience from the 2002–03 tour when England were thrashed 4-0 but managed a consolation win in the final Test in Sydney.
That victory, Vaughan said, played a crucial role in shaping the team that went on to reclaim the Ashes at home in 2005.Speaking on the Ashes, Vaughan said English cricket often operates in four-year cycles centred around home and away Ashes series.
