Adelaide, Dec 19: Former England captain Nasser Hussain believes England are facing near-impossible odds of keeping the Ashes alive, warning that only a “miracle” can prevent Australia from tightening their grip on both the third Test and the series.
Speaking after Australia established a commanding 356-run lead at stumps on Day 3 of the third Test at the Adelaide Oval, Hussain said the hosts are firmly in control and under no pressure to force the pace. With Australia already leading the series 2-0, even a draw in this Test would be enough for them to retain the Ashes urn.“Australia have got a lot of batting still to come, and they’re not going to be in a rush. They’re 2-0 up, and even with a draw here, the Ashes are retained,” Hussain said. Hussain explained that Australia’s approach is centred on building a massive lead to give their bowlers ideal conditions in the final innings. “They want their bowlers, one of whom is coming back from a few months out with an injury, to have a big lead,” he said.
