SHILLONG, Dec 19: In view of the anticipated increase in vehicular and pedestrian movement during the upcoming festive season, the Shillong Traffic Police (STP) has issued a set of advisories urging commuters to strictly follow traffic regulations to ensure public safety and smooth traffic flow.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem on Friday appealed to the public to use public transport wherever possible in order to reduce congestion, particularly in busy areas such as markets, shopping zones, places of worship, and event venues.
The SP advised motorists to avoid roadside parking and to park vehicles only in designated parking areas. Pedestrians were urged to refrain from jaywalking and to use footpaths and designated crossings, including zebra crossings. Commuters have also been advised to avoid peak hours where possible and to plan their travel with additional time. The police emphasized that emergency vehicles must be given the right of way at all times.
The advisory further stressed the importance of responsible driving, cautioning against drunken driving and overspeeding. Motorists and two-wheeler riders were reminded to wear seatbelts and helmets at all times and to drive cautiously.
The Shillong Traffic Police informed that, depending on traffic conditions in areas such as Police Bazaar and Laitumkhrah, vehicular movement may be diverted along alternative routes during the festive season.
The police sought public cooperation, stating that adherence to the advisory would help ensure a safe, smooth, and joyful festive season for all. The SP, lastly, extended festive greetings and wished the people of East Khasi Hills a safe and happy celebration period.
