SHILLONG, Dec 19: Two commercial LPG units along with four heavy-duty burners were, on Friday, distributed among 86 villages of the Khasi Hills Community REDD+ Project area by the Synjuk Ki Hima Arliang Wah Umiam Mawphlang Welfare Society.
The event took place at the Community Resource & Knowledge Centre Nongrum Mawphlang, East Khasi Hills.
This is part of the contribution of the villages to the protection and conservation of the forest habitat in the project area called the Community Development Fund (CDF).
The LPG units are expected to further enhance the goals of better preservation of forest habitat. These sets will be used during weddings, community services and other events, to lessen the use of fuel wood and save time.
The Khasi Hills Community REED+ project, since 2011, has been working in the region creating awareness for the communities and building capacity. The focus is to make conservation and preservation a success without hampering the livelihood which communities depend on from natural resources.
Alternative sources of livelihood, along with training programmes, have been offered constantly to the communities under the project area.
