TURA, Dec 22: The Department of Food Science and Nutrition, College of Community Science (Central Agricultural University, Imphal), Tura, Meghalaya, organized a three-day training programme on “Nutrition Education: Micronutrients and Complementary Feeding” recently.

The programme was sponsored by the North Garo Hills District Administration, Meghalaya State Rural Livelihoods Society (MSRLS), Meghalaya Early Childhood Development Mission (MECDM), and the Government Innovation Lab (SCEP). Such initiatives are critical in Meghalaya, where undernutrition and childhood stunting remain public health concerns, underscoring the need for culturally relevant, community-based nutrition interventions.

Eight hands-on practical sessions were conducted on the preparation of culturally acceptable, micronutrient-rich recipes using locally available foods, led by Dr. Ch. Basanti Devi, Dr. Ph. Vivekanandini Devi, Dr. Urvashi Sharma, and Dr. Bijaya Laxmi Sahu (Senior Scientist, AICRP). The programme was coordinated by Dr. Namita Singh, Professor and Head, Department of Food Science and Nutrition, and patronized by Dr. Jyoti V. Vastrad, Dean, College of Community Science.

Community Gender Health Activists (CGHAs) from Resubelpara, Bajengdoba, and Kharkutta blocks of North Garo Hills participated in the training, gaining practical skills to promote appropriate complementary feeding practices and improve child nutrition outcomes at the grassroots level.
