SHILLONG, Dec 21: A major road project worth Rs 265 crore has been sanctioned for the construction of a 47-km stretch from Phlangwanbroi in East Khasi Hills to Ranikor in South West Khasi Hills a move expected to significantly improve connectivity and boost tourism in the region.
Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Mawsynram MLA Ollan Sing Suin said the proposed road will connect with the intermediate road at Ranikor and will pass through two constituencies. Of the total length, around 27 kilometres will fall under the Mawsynram constituency, while the remaining 20 kilometres will pass through the Ranikor constituency.
“The tender for this project is likely to be floated this week,” the MLA said, clarifying that the road is not a World Bank-funded project but will be executed under a normal state scheme.
In addition, Suin said another major road project connecting Weiloi to Phlangwanbroi is awaiting sanction from the World Bank. He expressed optimism that the funding approval would be granted next year.
“This project will improve road connectivity from Mawphlang to Weiloi, Phlangwanbroi and up to Ranikor, and the road will be upgraded to an intermediate road,” he said.
According to the MLA, both road projects are crucial for improving the existing road conditions in the Mawsynram constituency, which he described as being in a “pathetic condition” at present.
“With the improvement of road infrastructure, tourism in the constituency will also receive a major boost,” Suin added.
Calling the projects a long-cherished aspiration of the people, the MLA said, “I would not hesitate to say that this is a Christmas and New Year gift for the people of Mawsynram constituency. These two road projects are dream projects for the people.”
The projects are expected to play a key role in enhancing connectivity, economic activity and tourism potential in one of Meghalaya’s most scenic but poorly connected regions.
