Shillong, Dec 22: A 42-year-old man, Shempang Mangu, succumbed to injuries after being brutally assaulted by unidentified assailants near the toll gate on the new road in Mawkhanu village, East Khasi Hills district, on the night of December 20.
According to family members, the incident took place around 11 pm. Mangu, who earned his livelihood by selling thatch, had gone out in his vehicle to transport the material when five unknown individuals reportedly intercepted him.
The assailants stopped his vehicle and subjected him to a merciless beating, kicking and striking him repeatedly, resulting in severe injuries.
Despite the attack, Mangu managed to escape and reached the main road, where he flagged down a passing truck loaded with thatch. He informed the driver about the assault, who then immediately alerted his family.
The family attempted to rush him to hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries around 3 am on December 21 while en route.
On December 22, the bereaved family filed an FIR at Diengpasoh Police Station, urging authorities to identify, arrest, and bring the perpetrators to justice.
A post-mortem examination was conducted at Civil Hospital, Nongpoh. The body was subsequently handed over to the family, and the last rites were performed on Monday.
