SHILLONG, Dec 22: Ahead of Christmas, Cabinet Minister Sanbor Shullai has stressed the importance of harmony among one and all, appealing to people to pray for one another and maintain unity irrespective of whether one is Khasi or non-Khasi, particularly in areas like Laban and its surrounding localities.
This message of inclusion was delivered on Monday as the cabinet minister inaugurated a renovated basketball court at the Ruling Children’s Home in Nongthymmai.
Addressing the children and staff at the inaugural event, Shullai highlighted the need to move beyond labels, while stating that the children should not be referred to as orphans but regarded as brothers and part of a larger family.
He then encouraged the young residents not to hesitate to approach him whenever they required support.
The minister also recalled celebrating his birthday at the home in July, an experience that prompted him to initiate the renovation after observing that the children, alongside schooling, needed proper facilities to play and grow.
He expressed happiness that the basketball court project was completed within the stipulated time and said he was grateful to be able to contribute, even in a small way.
Touching further upon the spirit of Christmas, Shullai called for unity, love, and forgiveness, urging everyone to thank God and reflect on their actions.
He remarked that as a public representative, he did not claim to be perfect but believed in the need to constantly rectify shortcomings, fill gaps and strive to become a better person.
Emphasising faith and gratitude, he advised people to begin their day by thanking God before getting out of bed and to end the day with prayer before sleeping.
The inauguration was warmly received by the children and caretakers, who viewed the renovated court as a positive addition to their daily lives and overall well-being.
