Shillong, Dec 23: North Shillong MLA Adelbert Nongrum has reiterated his demand for a separate academic reservation policy, emphasising that seat reservations under the state quota for higher education courses are distinct from the 1972 State Job Reservation Policy and related office memorandums.
Speaking on the issue, Nongrum recalled his five-day hunger strike in 2022 during Meghalaya’s 50th statehood celebrations, where he raised this demand.
“The State Reservation Policy report will be released soon. I have submitted suggestions stressing the need for a separate academic reservation framework. If necessary, I am ready to take extreme measures,” he stated.
Nongrum argued that academic reservation is more critical than job reservation, as it equips youth with professional qualifications, enabling self-reliance after studies. He cautioned against expecting government jobs routinely, noting high competition and limited vacancies.
“Our youth should not depend on electoral job promises. As a representative, I can offer hope, but securing government employment is challenging,” he added.
The MLA has consistently questioned linking academic reservations to job policies, advocating for an independent framework to address educational opportunities.
