SHILLONG, Dec 30: Anticipating massive crowds, the Shillong Traffic Police (STP) have announced significant restrictions and diversions, particularly around Police Bazaar.
The city has taken on a vibrant look as streets and commercial areas are illuminated with decorative lights. Police Bazaar, the heart of Shillong, is already seeing a steady surge in footfall as hundreds gather to enjoy the festive atmosphere and decorations.
To manage the anticipated crowds at Police Bazar on New Year’s Eve, the STP announced traffic restrictions for public safety. A “No Entry” order for vehicles proceeding toward Police Bazaar will be imposed on December 31 starting at 5:00 PM.
To reduce congestion and maintain order, vehicular traffic will be diverted at key points. Vehicles approaching from Kachari Point will be redirected towards Raj Bhawan Junction, while traffic coming from Umsohsun Junction (GS Road) will be diverted towards Boucher Road and Motphran.
Parking is permitted only on one side of the road between Centenary Junction and Rap’s Mansion Junction, and from Pinewood Junction to Botanical Garden Junction. Emergency service vehicles are exempt from all restrictions.
Despite the lack of official State Government programmes, several hotels, restaurants, and private establishments across the city have organised various celebrations and events for New Year’s Eve.
Meanwhile, the much-anticipated 28th Midnight Swim, organized by the Forever Young group, will be held at the Crinoline Swimming Pool on Wednesday. The event aims to usher in the New Year with a prayer, featuring nine tonnes of ice blocks placed inside the pool for an added challenge. Organisers strictly requested that participants refrain from consuming intoxicants prior to the event.
