SHILLONG, Jan 2: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) on Friday asked the central government to spell out its position on the demand for the introduction of inner line permit (ILP) in Meghalaya.
KSU president Lambokstar Marngar reminded that a resolution was passed by the Meghalaya Assembly in 2019 to urge the Centre to implement ILP in the state.
“The Government of India should make its stand very clear,” he said.
Asked about the Centre’s reported positive response to Meghalaya’s proposal to introduce an ILP-like protection by leveraging provisions of the newly enacted Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025, Marngar said the KSU will see what kind of ILP-like provisions the state and the Centre are looking to implement in the state.
“Right now, we are just seeing it in the media,” he said.
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong had disclosed that the matter was taken up during a recent meeting between Union Home Minister Amit Shah and a state government delegation in New Delhi.
However, the idea has been opposed by the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) which termed it as a calculated political diversion, intended to weaken and delay Meghalaya’s long-standing demand for a full-fledged ILP.
The HYC argued that ILP-like provisions were not equivalent to ILP.
