Over 1,100 vehicles set on fire across France during New Year’s Eve
Paris, Jan 2: More than 1100 vehicles were set on fire and over 500 people detained across France during New Year’s Eve celebrations, the country’s Interior Ministry has revealed. In accordance with the Interior Minister’s firm instructions, which required a high degree of responsiveness and mobility, law enforcement intervened immediately in cases of violence or vandalism, the ministry asserted. “As a result, 505 people were arrested (420 in 2024) and 403 were taken into custody (310 in 2024). Furthermore, a significant number of collective defence measures were deployed, demonstrating the systematic response of the internal security forces: 1,262,” read a statement issued by the ministry. “On the other hand, there has been an increase in vehicles set on fire (main source and spread): 1,173 vehicles burned, compared to 984 last year,” it added. Two teens killed in Amsterdam shooting, police probe on
Amsterdam, Jan 2: Police has launched investigation into the killing of two teenagers in a shooting incident at a park on New Year’s Day in Netherlands’ Amsterdam and is still actively looking for suspects who were linked to the incident, local media reported on Friday. No arrests have been made yet after the two teenagers were killed on Brug 721, a bridge covering Christoffel Plantijngracht in the Piet Wiedijkpark. The shooting incident occurred on Thursday at about 11:45 pm (local time), according to the police statement posted on social media, Netherlands-based NL Times reported. The two victims were pronounced dead at the spot. The suspect had fled from the spot by the time first responders reached at the site. It was not revealed whether the two victims knew each other or whether they were involved in a conflict with others. (IANS)
S Korea court issues new warrant to detain ex-Prez
Seoul, Jan 2: A Seoul court on Friday issued a warrant to detain former President Yoon Suk Yeol on charges linked to his alleged drone deployment to North Korea in October last year. The Seoul Central District Court issued the warrant, citing the risk of evidence destruction, according to a special counsel team lead by Cho Eun-suk. Yoon’s detention, which was set to expire on January 18, will be extended by up to another six months, Yonhap News Agency reported. Cho’s team earlier requested an extension of his arrest while additionally indicting him over the alleged drone operation, which it claimed was aimed at inciting the North’s retaliation and using it as a pretext for the martial law declaration in December 2024. The team suspects Yoon gave direct orders to the drone commander to dispatch drones to North Korea without reporting to the defence ministry or the Joint Chiefs of Staff. This is the third time Yoon has been arrested. (IANS)
