PREMIER LEAGUE

London, Jan 3: Aston Villa produced a statement performance in the Premier League on Saturday as Ollie Watkins’ continued resurgence inspired a commanding home victory over Nottingham Forest, while Brighton finally ended their winless run and Wolverhampton Wanderers delivered a crushing blow to West Ham United’s fading survival hopes.
At Villa Park, Unai Emery’s side responded emphatically to their midweek defeat at Arsenal, reasserting their authority on home soil with an 11th consecutive league win — their longest such run in 36 years. Central to that dominance was Watkins, whose fourth goal in three matches set the platform for a convincing result that strengthened Villa’s grip near the top of the table.
Watkins struck in first-half stoppage time, finding space 20 yards from goal before unleashing a fierce effort that broke Forest’s resistance. John McGinn doubled the lead shortly after the restart, before Morgan Gibbs-White briefly gave the visitors hope with a well-taken reply. Any prospect of a comeback was swiftly extinguished, however, when Forest goalkeeper John Victor ventured out of his area, allowing McGinn to roll the ball into an empty net from distance and restore Villa’s two-goal advantage.
The win lifted Villa up to second place in the standings, moving them 12 points clear of fifth-placed Chelsea, while Forest slipped to a fourth straight league defeat for the first time in more than two years. The loss compounded a turbulent period for the club following the departure of former manager Steve Cooper, with another daunting assignment awaiting away at West Ham on Tuesday. Forest remain just four points above the relegation zone, and their lack of organisation and concentration continues to raise alarm.Watkins’ contribution marked another milestone in his revival. After managing just one goal in his first 19 appearances this season, the England international has now scored six times in his last eight games, including this strike on his 250th appearance for Villa. His growing understanding with Morgan Rogers has also been key, with the duo now combining for 10 Premier League goals since the start of last season — more than any other partnership in the division over that period.
At the Amex Stadium, Brighton finally brought an end to a six-match winless streak with a deserved 2-0 victory over struggling Burnley, whose own barren run stretched to 11 league games — the longest in the Premier League. Goals from Georginio Rutter and Yasin Ayari ensured the Seagulls returned to winning ways and climbed to eighth in the table, just five points adrift of the top four.
Rutter opened the scoring with a powerful finish after following up his own involvement in the build-up, while Ayari struck decisively just 68 seconds into the second half, capitalising on a costly defensive error to double Brighton’s lead. Burnley showed brief signs of life after the break, with substitute Loum Tchaouna seeing an effort cleared off the line, but their response lacked conviction and ultimately came too late.
The defeat leaves Burnley firmly entrenched in trouble, with manager Scott Parker facing mounting pressure as his side continue to struggle for results despite occasional flashes of promise.
Meanwhile, at a freezing Molineux, Wolverhampton Wanderers claimed their first league win of the season in emphatic fashion, hammering West Ham United 3-0 to deepen the Hammers’ crisis. First-half goals from Jhon Arias, Hwang Hee-chan and Mateus Mané sealed a dominant display from Wolves, while West Ham extended their winless run to nine matches.Wolves made a blistering start, opening the scoring inside four minutes when Arias converted from close range following neat work down the flank. Hwang doubled the lead from the penalty spot after a clumsy challenge in the box, before Mané added a third with a composed finish to cap a devastating first-half performance.West Ham, by contrast, struggled to muster any meaningful response. Despite enjoying marginally more possession after the interval, they failed to register a single shot on target, with Jarrod Bowen’s acrobatic but wayward effort summing up a disjointed afternoon.
