SHILLONG, Jan 4: Police have intensified their search for the suspects involved in the brutal assault on Milas Khaii, a father of 11, in Wahsarang village of East Jaintia Hills.
The incident occurred on the night of December 25, and Khaii later succumbed to his injuries on January 1. His younger brother, Kamelus Khaii, who was also attacked, sustained injuries but received treatment and was later discharged from hospital.
Meanwhile, East Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police Vikash Kumar confirmed that police teams are conducting operations in nearby jungles in an attempt to trace the absconding suspects.
According to police reports, a group of individuals led by village headman Pius Khaii arrived at Milas Khaii’s house around 9.30 pm on December 25. The group was searching for a man identified as Jur Tlang, who had allegedly threatened the headman. The suspects believed that Tlang was hiding at Milas Khaii’s house along with his younger brother, Kamelus Khaii.
The situation escalated into a violent confrontation, with a misunderstanding leading to a physical assault. Police said the group, led by headman Pius Khaii and Tali Lamo, attacked both brothers using sticks and a wooden stool.
An FIR was registered after a report was received on December 30, 2025, from Chinda Bareh, who stated that her father, Milas Khaii, and uncle, Kamelus Khaii, were attacked and hospitalised.
On December 31, both parties reportedly reached an understanding and amicably compromised, leading to the withdrawal of the FIR. However, on the morning of January 1 at around 5.15 am, authorities were informed that Milas Khaii had succumbed to his injuries.
Following the death, a Sub-Inspector, along with staff, was immediately deployed to handle the situation. On the same day, another FIR was filed by Pas Khaii, and the case was registered as KLT PS Case No. 01(01)/2026 under sections 105/3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Police said the investigation is continuing and efforts are under way to apprehend all those involved in the attack.
