30 killed as gunmen raid village in Nigeria
Minna, Jan 4: At least 30 villagers have been killed while several others were abducted by gunmen who raided a village in northern Nigeria’s Niger state, police said Sunday, the latest in a cycle of deadly violence in the conflict-hit region. The gunmen stormed the Kasuwan-Daji village in Niger state’s Borgu local government area on Saturday evening and opened fire on residents. They also razed down the local market and several houses, Niger state police spokesman Wasiu Abiodun said in a statement. At least two residents put the death toll at 37 and said it could be much higher, as some people remained missing as of Sunday. (AP)
4 cops killed in firing in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
Islamabad, Jan 4: Four police personnel were killed in two separate firing incidents in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Sunday, local media reported citing the police. Three police personnel were killed after unidentified assailants riding a motorcycle opened fire on traffic police personnel in Lakki Marwat’s Sarai Naurang city, according to police spokesperson, Pakistan-based Geo News reported. Following the incident, the attackers fled from the spot. Meanwhile, a police personnel was killed after unidentified gunmen opened fire in Mandan area of Bannu. Police said Constable Rashid Khan was targeted while he was heading to Mandan Police Station for duty from his home. (IANS)
4 Indians killed in accident in Saudi Arabia
Malappuram, Jan 4: Four members of a family from Manjeri in Kerala’s Malappuram district were killed in a tragic road accident in Madina, Saudi Arabia, plunging their relatives and the local community into deep grief. The victims were identified as Abdul Jaleel (52), a native of Vellila in Manjeri; his mother Maimunath Kakkengal (73); his wife Thasna Thodengal (40); and their 14-year-old son Aadhil Jaleel. All four died on the spot on Saturday evening due to the impact of the collision, according to preliminary reports received from Saudi Arabia. The accident occurred while the family was travelling by car from Mecca to Jeddah after completing Umrah. (IANS)
