SHILLONG/GUWAHATI, Jan 5: An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale struck Morigaon district in Assam in the early hours of Monday, with tremors rocking Shillong, central Assam and neighbouring regions.
According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the tremor occurred at 4:17 am on Monday. The epicentre was located at latitude 26.37 degrees North and longitude 92.29 degrees East, at a depth of 50 km.
Officials said there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage to property. However, the early-morning shaking briefly unsettled residents in several areas, many of whom were awakened by the tremors.
An elderly woman was reported to have sustained a head injury during the tremor in Morigaon district of Assam while rushing out of her home in panic. Two more injuries were also reported.
Eight houses were partially damaged by the quake in Nagaon and Nalbari districts; an elementary school was partially damaged in Nagaon, while the main gate of a temple was partially damaged in Sonitpur district.
