Indonesia’s panda cub Rio thriving 40 days after birth

Cisarua, Jan 6: Indonesia’s Taman Safari park in Cisarua, West Java province, has released a heartwarming video showing the progress of a giant panda cub, 40 days after his birth. Named Satrio Wiratama and affectionately nicknamed “Rio,” the cub was examined for the first time outside the incubator, allowing veterinarians to measure and monitor his growth.
The footage captures Rio’s transformation from a tiny, fragile pink newborn to a fluffy black-and-white panda with a growing, healthy physique.
According to veterinarian Bongot Huaso Mulia, Rio is developing well, with his body weight having increased by 46% over the past month and his body length nearly doubling, at a 95% increase. Rio was born on November 27, 2025, to Hu Chun, a 15-year-old female, and Cai Tao, as part of a long-standing conservation effort. The pair arrived in Indonesia in 2017 under a 10-year conservation partnership with China and reside in a specially designed enclosure about 70 kilometers from Jakarta.
Rio’s birth was particularly challenging, requiring the fourth attempt at artificial insemination after four unsuccessful natural mating attempts. Mulia highlighted the difficulties involved in breeding giant pandas, which are famously low in fertility.
Giant pandas are not only a conservation priority due to their fragile population—fewer than 1,900 remain in the wild, restricted to China’s Sichuan, Shaanxi, and Gansu provinces—but also a symbol of China’s international “panda diplomacy,” where pandas are loaned to foreign zoos as a soft-power gesture.
China’s Ambassador to Indonesia, Wang Lutong, celebrated Rio’s arrival, calling it “a moment we’ve been waiting for” and praising the years of hard work that culminated in the successful birth.
The cub’s health and growth are being closely monitored, with the park and conservationists expressing hope that Rio will continue to thrive and contribute to the global efforts to conserve this iconic species.
This birth represents a rare and joyful milestone in giant panda conservation, highlighting both the dedication of the caretakers and the importance of international collaboration in protecting endangered wildlife. (AP)
