Tura, January 9: Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad K. Sangma, on Friday formally distributed appointment letters to newly recruited Unarmed Branch (UB) Sub-Inspectors of the Meghalaya Police at a ceremonial programme held at the headquarters of the 2nd Meghalaya Police Battalion, Goeragre. With this, 76 new Sub-Inspectors were officially inducted into the State Police force.
Addressing the newly appointed officers, the Chief Minister described Sub-Inspectors as the “ears and eyes” of the State Government at the grassroots level. He underscored their critical role in maintaining law and order, gathering intelligence, and ensuring the effective functioning of administrative and governance mechanisms.
Reflecting on the challenges associated with police service, Sangma urged the recruits to remain committed and grateful, even during difficult phases of their careers. In a light-hearted remark, he asked if anyone was “complaining about the sun,” reminding them that they were now entrusted with responsibilities they had once aspired and prayed for.
The Chief Minister further emphasized that the recruitment process had been conducted in a fair and transparent manner. He encouraged the officers to approach their forthcoming training with seriousness and dedication, stating that it would serve as the foundation and guiding framework throughout their professional careers in law enforcement.
Director General of Police, Idashisha Nongrang, IPS, in her address, outlined the rigorous selection process. She informed that out of 21,007 applicants, 9,507 candidates appeared for the Physical Efficiency Test (PET), from which 1,970 candidates were shortlisted for the written examination. Following subsequent stages, 76 candidates were finally selected. She also highlighted the strong academic credentials of the new batch, noting that a majority possess technical qualifications, with 23 per cent holding postgraduate degrees.
The programme was attended by several senior officials and dignitaries, including Brening A. Sangma, Minister in charge of Border Areas Development, Dr. Shakil P. Ahammed, Chief Secretary of Meghalaya, Vibhor Agarwal, Deputy Commissioner, West Garo Hills, Rituraj Ravi, IPS, Senior Superintendent of Police (TAP), Abraham T. Sangma, Superintendent of Police, West Garo Hills, along with other senior police and civil administration officers.
