Guwahati, Jan 9: In a political development ahead of the Assam Assembly elections, regional party Jatiya Dal-Assam, led by Rajya Sabha MP Ajit Kumar Bhuyan, on Friday merged with the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP).

Notably, Bhuyan is the president of the Opposition unity platform, the United Opposition Forum (Asom), which was formed to take on the BJP in the state.

He was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2020 with the support of Opposition parties, including the Congress and AIUDF.

AJP general secretary Jagadish Bhuyan, while confirming the development, said the merger of the regional parties would strengthen the AJP, both organisationally and politically, ahead of the Assembly elections.

The development bears significance to the Opposition, which is trying to cobble up an alliance to counter the BJP-led NDA in the state in the Assembly elections, scheduled to be held in March-April this year.
