WASHINGTON, Jan 11: Hindu diaspora groups have appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take urgent action over escalating violence against Hindus in Bangladesh, citing killings, mob attacks, and alleged state inaction.
The Global Hindu Diaspora described the situation as a “massacre of Hindus” in a letter expressing “profound sorrow and urgency.” The appeal follows the lynching and burning of Dipu Chandra Das and a series of similar attacks.
The letter noted that violence against Hindus sharply increased from August 2025, with dozens of killings, rapes, temple desecrations, and mob attacks reported. It recalled historical failures to protect minorities, citing the Liaquat-Nehru Pact of 1950 and the post-1971 repatriation of Hindu refugees to Bangladesh. The diaspora highlighted the role of disinformation campaigns and the near disappearance of local media coverage of human rights abuses.
Specific cases, including that of Chinmoy Krishna Das, a senior ISKCON monk jailed since November 2024 on allegedly fabricated charges, were cited to illustrate the communal targeting of Hindus.
Between August 2024 and June 2025, more than 2,400 attacks on minorities were reported, including 82 killings from August to November 2024, with 11 more deaths in the past 35 days.
The group urged India to publicly condemn the attacks, establish humanitarian corridors and UN-monitored safe zones, and press the issue at the United Nations.
It also announced a nationwide silent protest in the US on January 31 to raise awareness and demand international action against ongoing violence toward Hindus in Bangladesh. (IANS)
