TURA, Jan 11: Several groups from Bajengdoba in North Garo Hills, including the FAF, Matgrik Do’mesal, AYWO, AMK and AAYF, have expressed strong opposition to a recent notification issued by the Education department on January 2, terming it a “strategic stealing” and an erosion of powers belonging to the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBoSE) in favour of the Directorate of Educational Research and Training (DERT).
The local groups raised major concerns, including the decision to vest sole authority in DERT, which was earlier exercised by MBoSE, and the loss of key responsibilities as the move strips MBoSE of its primary functions, specifically the entire process of prescribing textbooks for children in affiliated schools.
“By transferring the preparation, publishing and selection of textbooks, supplementary books and examination question papers to a single department, the administration is ‘putting a lock’ on a major department,” they stated.
The groups also felt that the decision would adversely impact the student community in various ways.
Earlier, the Meghalaya government issued a notification, clarifying that DERT would now be the sole authority to notify the curriculum, syllabus and textbooks for all classes from pre-primary to Class XII in the state.
