COPENHAGEN, Jan 13: Denmark’s foreign minister announced Tuesday that US Vice President JD Vance will host a meeting in Washington this week with Danish and Greenlandic officials as tensions rise over the Trump administration’s push to gain control of Greenland.
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said the talks will be held at the White House, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio also expected to attend.
Rasmussen and Greenland’s foreign minister, Vivian Motzfeldt, had previously been expected to meet Rubio in Washington, though the meeting had not been officially confirmed.
Neither the White House nor Vance’s office immediately responded to requests for comment.
Greenland is a vast, resource-rich Arctic island and a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark, a NATO ally of the United States.
Relations have grown strained as President Donald Trump reiterated his position that the US must “take Greenland” to prevent Russia or China from gaining influence in the Arctic.
He said he prefers a deal but insisted Greenland would come under US control “one way or the other,” with reports indicating the White House is considering various options, including military action.
A bipartisan US congressional delegation will visit Copenhagen Friday and Saturday to demonstrate unity with Denmark.
Ahead of that, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen will meet Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen and the Faroe Islands’ leader to discuss the issue and broader Arctic relations. (AP)
