SHILLONG, Jan 14: The redeveloped Iawmusiang Market in Jowai will be handed over to the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) upon its completion, Cabinet Minister and Jowai MLA Wailadmiki Shylla said.
Shylla stated that construction is progressing well and the contractor may finish ahead of the 24-month deadline. The state government revived the project, which had been stalled for decades, by earmarking Rs 25 crore for the work.
Originally sanctioned by the Ministry of DoNER in 2001, the project was halted after the building design was changed from a G+6 to a G+2 structure without the Ministry’s knowledge. This led to the suspension of the second funding installment, leaving the project dormant for over 20 years. As one of the oldest and largest traditional markets in the Jaintia Hills, the completion of Iawmusiang Market is expected to provide a significant boost to the local economy.
