Tura, Jan 16: West Garo Hills (WGH) police tasted further success in apprehending 2 more suspects in the assault and murder of ACHIK member, Dilseng M Sangma, bringing the total of those arrested to 6.

On Jan 9, members of ACHIK who had gone to inspect and shut down an illegal stone quarry were assaulted by a group of miscreants upon their return from the quarry with weapons, stones and sticks leading to the death of Sangma while leaving another critical.

The ACHIK members had gone in 4 vehicles, two of which were able to escape despite the damage caused while another two were abandoned at the site of the incident. The assaulters apparently had interests in the running of various quarries. The incident took place at Goalgaon under Wadagokgre Aking, within Rajabala PS limits.

The incident immediately sparked outrage with residents seeking immediate action and arrests against those responsible.

Acting swiftly, WGH police arrested 3 persons, identified as Rafikul Islam (47) Anarul Islam (30) and Atowar Islam (40) on the very night of the incident, following inputs from reliable sources.

Upon further receipt of more information into the incident, WGH police further arrested Ariful Islam (30) on Jan 11.

Last night, Jan 15, Rajabala police arrested Bahadur Sheikh (21) and Mozidur Sheikh (22) for their involvement in the assault/murder case.

Police sources further confirmed that the investigation into the matter remains ongoing and more arrests were likely. However the owner/operator of the illegal quarry, who absconded on the night of the incident, remains at large.
