Shillong, Jan 15: A suspected short circuit triggered a fire on the top floor of the Shillong Government College of Engineering at 7.30 am on Thursday morning, gutting a room used as a storeroom by the Sports and Youth Affairs Department.
Officials said the fire broke out at around 7.30 am in a room where blankets and other materials meant for sports events and youth festivals were stored.
Fire and Emergency Services personnel acted swiftly and succeeded in dousing the flames.
There were no reports of injuries or loss of life. Soon after the incident, Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui, college principal Comingstarful Marthong and officials of the Sports and Youth Affairs Department reached the site to take stock of the situation.
The college management has decided to lodge an FIR at Mawlai Police Station in connection with the incident.
