SHILLONG, Jan 18: West Jaintia Hills Police has recovered 37 stolen two-wheelers and arrested 19 suspects since the beginning of the year following a crackdown on vehicle theft.
The Superintendent of Police’s office stated that a surge in thefts had been reported involving unattended or inadequately secured motorcycles and scooters. While several cases originated in West Jaintia Hills, similar incidents were noted across other parts of Meghalaya.
A breakthrough occurred on the night of January 16 during a checkpoint operation at Lad Demthring. Officers intercepted three suspicious vehicles whose riders broke through the barricade and ignored signals to stop. After a brief pursuit, the suspects abandoned the vehicles and fled into a nearby forest.
A subsequent search operation led to the arrest of Meshanki Langstang, whom police identified as a habitual offender. He was taken into custody at Jowai Police Station for further legal action.
Police records show that 41 complaints related to two-wheeler theft were received between January 1 and January 18. Of these, 37 cases were formally registered. All 37 stolen vehicles were recovered and returned to their owners after verification. Legal proceedings are now underway against the 19 arrested individuals.
The district police issued an advisory urging the public to park in secure, well-lit areas and use additional security measures such as steering locks and GPS trackers. Citizens are encouraged to promptly report suspicious activities to the nearest police station or via the emergency number 112.
