Guwahati, Jan 20: The Dr Bhupen Hazarika Centre for Creativity at The
Assam Royal Global University (RGU) today celebrated Silpi Diwas with great enthusiasm
through a special programme titled “Tore More Alokore Jatra”, commemorating the legacy
of Rupkonwar Jyotiprasad Agarwala.
The event was held at the Jyoti Mancha auditorium on the occasion of Agarwala’s death anniversary on January 17, according to a Press release.
The programme was attended by Prof Amarjyoti Choudhury, Professor Emeritus and Chair
Professor of the Centre; Prof A. K. Buragohain, Vice Chancellor of Royal Global University;
Shri Ankur Pansari, Executive Vice President, RGU, along with other faculty members,
students, and guests. Renowned academician and artist Prof. Mridula Das graced the occasion as the chief guest.
Addressing the gathering, Prof Amarjyoti Choudhury described Jyotiprasad Agarwala as an
extraordinary creative genius—a lyricist, composer, playwright, musician and filmmaker
combined in one personality.
Recalling Joymoti, the first Assamese film made by Agarwala, Prof Choudhury highlighted why he was revered as “Rupkonwar,” the Prince of Beauty. He also shared anecdotes from Agarwala’s childhood, reflecting his deep fascination with beauty, light, and harmony, and his dream of an egalitarian society and world citizenship.
Prof Mridula Das, in her address, reflected on the artistic and humanistic values upheld by
Rupkonwar and their relevance in contemporary society. Vice Chancellor Prof A.K.
Buragohain also paid rich tributes, recalling Jyotiprasad Agarwala’s immense contribution to
Assamese art, literature and culture.
The celebration featured performances of Agarwala’s songs and poems by students and
faculty members, along with talks that paid tribute to his timeless artistic contributions,
making the observance a meaningful homage to one of Assam’s greatest cultural icons.
