SHILLONG, Jan 24: A group of young people from across Meghalaya will embark on a long-distance walk from Tura to Shillong starting January 26 to encourage the state’s youth to reject drugs and lead lives of purpose.
Organised under the banner ‘Walking with Purpose’, the team will trek from West Garo Hills to East Khasi Hills via Nongstoin, concluding the trek around February 3 or 4.
The team includes Welkin Stone Shadap (East Khasi Hills), Kyrsoijingtip Ryntathiang (Ri-Bhoi), and Bashaiphar Shylla (Eastern West Khasi Hills).
Speaking for the group, Shadap stated that the walk is a conscious stand against drug abuse and aimlessness.
“This walk is our response to the challenges facing today’s youth. Instead of surrendering to drugs or despair, we want to show that transformation is possible through discipline and focus,” Shadap said. He added that the initiative is a call for young people to choose “direction over distraction.”
The organisers noted that while previous walks were individual efforts, this year’s event has evolved into a collective movement representing different regions of the state. The group aims to make positive lifestyle choices the standard for the youth of Meghalaya rather than the exception.
Shadap expressed gratitude to government departments, educational institutions, and local businesses for their support of the initiative, which he described as a march toward a healthier society and a more focused future.
