SHILLONG, Jan 25: In recognition of the district’s impressive planning and delivery in conduct of elections, East Khasi Hills has been conferred the national ‘Best Election District’ award for excellence in election management and logistics. Deputy Commissioner Rosetta M Kurbah received the honour from President Droupadi Murmu at the National Voters’ Day celebration held at the Manekshaw Centre in New Delhi on Sunday.
The award recognises the district’s efficient conduct of the Assembly and Lok Sabha elections, specifically highlighting its planning, coordination, and last-mile delivery. Along with East Khasi Hills, Nuapada (Odisha) and Purnea (Bihar) were also honoured in the same category.
Kurbah described the recognition as a proud moment, noting that election duty is one of the most demanding responsibilities for the district administration.
“It is truly an honour to receive this recognition. Elections are a gigantic task. All routine administrative work comes to a halt, and managing the entire process is extremely challenging,” she said.
Kurbah attributed the success to meticulous planning. “Preparing a strong master plan is essential. From managing resources and personnel to ensuring we reach every voter, we took care to see that no one was left behind,” she added, noting that inclusivity remained the core objective.
Addressing the gathering, President Droupadi Murmu said that voting is not merely a political expression but a reflection of citizens’ faith in India’s democratic process. She noted that voting serves as a medium for citizens to express their aspirations and reminded the audience that voters are the architects of the nation’s future.
She urged all eligible citizens to exercise their right to vote while remaining mindful of their constitutional duties.
The President also highlighted India’s chairship of the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA). She noted that 42 election management bodies and representatives from several countries participated in the recent India International Conference on Democracy and Election Management, underlining India’s role in strengthening global democratic practices.
