USTM Alumnus Selected for Padma Shri 2026

Ri-Bhoi, Jan 27:  The University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya (USTM) takes pride in the selection of Dr Jogesh Deuri, distinguished PhD alumnus of the Department of Botany, for the Padma Shri Award 2026, one of India’s highest civilian honours.

Dr Deuri has been recognised for his outstanding and sustained contributions to the field of sericulture and rural livelihood development, which have significantly impacted grassroots economies and promoted sustainable livelihood practices.

Dr Jogesh Deuri was awarded his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in 2018 from USTM under
the guidance of Prof. P. K. Baruah, Department of Botany. His academic journey reflects a
long-standing association with excellence in higher education and research.

Notably, his academic degree was formally conferred at the Fourth Convocation of USTM
in the august presence of the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Shri Conrad K.
Sangma, along with several eminent academicians, marking a significant milestone in his
scholarly career.

Dr Deuri’s research and subsequent professional work have played a pivotal role in
advancing scientific practices in sericulture while empowering rural communities through
innovation, capacity building, and inclusive development models.

Commenting on the national recognition, the Hon’ble Chancellor, USTM Shri Mahbubul
Hoque, noted that the Padma Shri honour is a matter of pride not only for the awardee but
also for the entire university community.
While Honble Vice Chancellor Prof GD Sharma mentioned, the achievement underscores
USTM’s robust research ecosystem, its emphasis on socially relevant scholarship, and its
commitment to nurturing researchers who contribute meaningfully to national development.
The University also extends its congratulations to all other Padma Shri Award recipients of
2026, acknowledging their diverse and exemplary contributions across fields that enrich the
nation.
