SHILLONG, Jan 27: The Meghalaya Legislative Assembly will hold its Budget Session from February 16 to 27, spanning a total of 10 working days.
Speaking to reporters after the Business Advisory Committee meeting here on Tuesday, Assembly Speaker Thomas A. Sangma said the schedule had been finalised after detailed deliberations to ensure sufficient time for legislative business.
He added that Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma will present the budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year on February 20.
According to the Speaker, three days have been set aside for private members’ business, while the remaining days will be devoted to government business.
Acknowledging recurring concerns over time constraints during Assembly sessions, Sangma said specific measures have been taken to ensure smoother proceedings. He also noted that the House would maintain flexibility with sitting hours if necessary.
“On the day of voting on supplementary demands, the Assembly will sit until 3 pm, but the schedule may be extended if required,” he said.
Dismissing speculation about any postponement, Sangma confirmed that the session would proceed as planned. He added that the decision to begin the budget session earlier followed advice from the government.
Replying to a query, the Speaker said the upcoming GHADC polls were also a factor in scheduling the Budget Session ahead of time.
