SHILLONG, Jan 27: Assembly Speaker Thomas A Sangma on Tuesday said that the construction of the new Meghalaya Legislative Assembly building at Mawdiangdiang in New Shillong Township is progressing as scheduled and the June deadline for its completion remains unchanged.
Speaking to reporters, Sangma said that while the exterior structure of the building has been completed, significant work is still underway inside the complex.
“From the outside, the building appears to be completed, but the internal and interior works are still going on,” he said.
The Speaker explained that the ongoing interior work includes the installation of audiovisual systems, CCTV cameras, and other technical infrastructure, which requires extensive wiring, cabling, and computing-related work and therefore takes time. To closely monitor the progress, Sangma informed that a High-Power Committee meeting will
be held soon at the project site. The committee will review the status of the remaining works and assess the timeline for completion.
When asked about the exact percentage of completion, the Speaker said he was unable to provide precise figures at present. “I am scheduled to visit the site later today, so I will be in a better position to comment after that,” he added.
Reiterating the government’s commitment to the project, Sangma maintained that the June deadline continues to stand. “We are trying our best to complete the work within the stipulated timeframe,” he said.
