SHILLONG, Jan 29: Amid the growing demand for a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Garo Hills, Meghalaya Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) BDR Tiwari has stated that the Election department is fully prepared to conduct the exercise in the state.
Clarifying that the SIR, whenever held, will be conducted throughout the state, Tiwari noted that the exercise is currently being carried out in 12 states across the country.
“Meghalaya Election Department is awaiting the schedule from the Election Commission of India (ECI) to initiate the process,” he said.
Assuring full transparency in the exercise, Tiwari mentioned that the department has already completed all necessary preparatory measures and is only waiting for formal instructions from the ECI to roll out the process in Meghalaya.
In recent weeks, several NGOs and political parties in the state have urged the government to conduct the SIR in Garo Hills.
The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) has specifically called upon the state government to carry out the revision in the plain belts of Garo Hills, asserting that such an exercise would reveal significant demographic changes in the region.
Meanwhile, on a positive note for the department, the CEO said that the recent ‘Best Election District’ award conferred on East Khasi Hills for excellence in election management and logistics would serve as motivation to perform even better in the future. In recognition of the district’s exemplary planning and execution of elections, East Khasi Hills was awarded the national ‘Best Election District’ honour.
The award was received by East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Rosetta M. Kurbah from President Droupadi Murmu during the National Voters’ Day celebrations held at the Manekshaw Centre in New Delhi.
