KHLIEHRIAT, Jan 29: Meghalaya Police on Thursday destroyed seized narcotics worth approximately Rs 9.11 crore at the Star Cement Ltd. kiln in Lumshnong, East Jaintia Hills.
The disposal exercise was led by Inspector General of Police (CID) Aditya Goenka, in the presence of Superintendents of Police from East Jaintia Hills, East Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills, and South West Khasi Hills.
Speaking to the media, Goenka stated that District Disposal Committees were established to ensure the scientific destruction of seized substances in strict accordance with the law. The destroyed contraband included 183 grams of heroin, 296 kilograms of ganja, 9 kilograms of methamphetamine, 2,793 bottles of codeine-based cough syrup, and 534 R-7 tablets. These seizures were linked to 58 cases registered across various districts, reflecting continuous enforcement actions against trafficking. Goenka reiterated the state government’s commitment to making Meghalaya drug-free through sustained operations.
He also highlighted that under the leadership of Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, the DREAM Mission has evolved into a mass movement. The strategy focuses on reducing supply through enforcement while simultaneously prioritizing rehabilitation, awareness, and prevention.
Goenka added that the destruction of these narcotics is a significant step toward protecting vulnerable individuals from the impact of drug abuse.
