The financial assistance was handed over on January 29 by Nartiang MLA Sniawbhalang Dhar and is aimed at enhancing sports infrastructure at the village level, where access to proper playing facilities remains a key challenge for aspiring footballers. The upgraded ground is expected to serve as a regular venue for practice sessions, inter-village matches and local tournaments.
Speaking at the event, Dhar highlighted the importance of sports in nurturing young talent and building discipline and teamwork among the youth. He said improved infrastructure plays a crucial role in identifying and developing sporting potential, particularly in football, which continues to be one of the most popular sports in the region.
Members of the Khonsaro Sports Club said the funding would be utilised specifically for upgrading the playing surface and related facilities, ensuring the ground meets basic standards for organised football activities. They noted that better infrastructure would help local players train more consistently and compete more effectively at district-level competitions. With football continuing to thrive across the Jaintia Hills, the development of village-level grounds is seen as a vital step in strengthening the sport’s foundation and providing young players with a platform to progress through the competitive ranks
