SHILLONG, Jan 31: Deputy Chief Minister and senior NPP leader Sniawbhalang Dhar has said he has no objection to any candidate contesting from the Nartiang constituency in the 2028 Assembly elections.
Dhar, a four-time MLA from Nartiang, was responding to speculation that VPP president and Nongkrem legislator Ardent M. Basaiawmoit might enter the fray from the seat in the next polls.
“Anyone is free to contest. There is no issue at all. Even candidates from outside the constituency can contest. Congress, VPP, BJP, UDP—any party can field a candidate,” Dhar said.
Addressing the possibility of Basaiawmoit contesting from Nartiang, Dhar suggested such a move could affect the VPP leader’s standing in his current seat. “If he chooses to contest from here, I fear the people of Nongkrem may not accept him back,” he said.
Dhar expressed confidence in the voters of Nartiang, noting they have elected him for four consecutive terms. He contrasted this with the Nongkrem constituency, which he claimed has a history of changing representatives after every election.
