Shillong, Feb 5: Meghalaya added another proud chapter to its sporting legacy after clinching the 40+ football title at the 8th National Masters Games 2026, held at Pimpri, Pune, from January 27 to 31, with a convincing 2–0 victory over Kerala in the final.
Representing the State under the banner of Rympei PIP, the Meghalaya veterans delivered a calm, disciplined and tactically astute performance in the summit clash, controlling proceedings against a strong Kerala side to secure the gold medal. The win not only sealed top honours in the category but also highlighted the depth of footballing culture that continues to thrive in Meghalaya beyond the competitive prime years.
The final showcased Meghalaya’s composure and cohesion, as the team combined defensive solidity with measured attacking intent to outplay their opponents. Officials associated with the squad described the triumph as the result of collective effort, fitness discipline and years of shared experience, with the players displaying a level of understanding that comes only from long association with the game.
The success holds special significance for the State, reaffirming Meghalaya’s reputation as a football-loving region where the sport remains an integral part of life even after formal retirement from competitive leagues. Team officials noted that the achievement stands as a testament to the players’ dedication to maintaining physical fitness, mental sharpness and the enduring bond that football creates among teammates over decades.
The National Masters Games featured participants from across India, drawing working professionals, businesspersons, retired personnel and fitness enthusiasts who continue to compete at a high level. Despite Meghalaya not having a formally registered Masters Games Association at present, the State team was granted special permission to take part in the tournament — an opportunity that ultimately culminated in national glory.
Members of the Meghalaya contingent believe that their participation and success at the Pune event could serve as a catalyst for the formation of a Masters Games Association in the State.
Such a body, they said, would help create structured opportunities for veteran athletes to remain active, competitive and connected to sport, while also aligning with national efforts to promote healthy living across age groups.
