SHILLONG, Feb 7: The state government has been urged to suspend all official programmes as a mark of respect to the labourers who lost their lives inside the coal mine.
Speaking about the incident, former MLA PT Sawkmie said the government should temporarily halt all its programmes to honour the victims of the coal mine accident that occurred in East Jaintia Hills. He described the incident as horrific and deeply tragic, expressing sympathy for those who were directly affected, especially the families and close relatives of the deceased.
Sawkmie further stated that the scale of the tragedy was unprecedented, noting that dozens of bodies have already been recovered while police suspect that more victims may still be trapped.
In view of the painful incident, he conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families and to all those closely associated with the victims. At the same time, Sawkmie urged both the state and central governments to find effective measures to permanently stop illegal coal mining in the state.
The tragic incident occurred at Thangsko village in East Jaintia Hills, and as of Friday, the confirmed death toll stood at 27.
