BENGALURU, Feb 8: The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) on Sunday announced that the planned annual metro fare revision, originally scheduled to take effect from February 9, has been deferred until further notice.
The corporation stated that the matter will be reviewed by its board before a final decision is made, and commuters will be informed once a decision is taken.
BMRCL emphasized its continued commitment to providing safe, reliable, and affordable metro services to Bengaluru residents.
The decision follows criticism from opposition leaders.
BJP MP Tejasvi Surya, after interacting with commuters, said they were frustrated with frequent fare hikes and accused Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM D K Shivakumar of misleading the public by blaming the Centre for the increase.
Surya demanded the formation of a fresh Fare Fixation Committee (FFC) and noted that Union Housing Minister Manohar Lal Khattar had instructed officials to temporarily halt the hike and personally review anomalies in the FFC.
JD(S) leader and Union Minister H D Kumaraswamy also criticized the state government, saying it was pushing the fare increase despite the Centre’s advice.
He accused the state of passing the buck to the Centre and undermining cooperation in implementing central schemes and policies. (PTI)
