TURA, Feb 8: Williamnagar-based group NGCO has sought the reopening of coal mining in a legally permissible manner in the state, to ease the plight of many families who depended on it for a livelihood.
“Coal mining has been one of the major sources of livelihood, employment, and revenue generation in Meghalaya for many decades. Thousands of labourers, transporters, small business owners, and indigenous landowners have depended on coal mining for their survival and economic stability. It has played a vital role in strengthening the local economy and supporting rural communities,” it said.
The organisation felt that instead of completely stopping the activity permissible mining should be allowed by forming new laws and adopting responsible methods.
“Stopping a legal business without providing sustainable alternatives harms the common people and slows down development. Meghalaya needs balanced and responsible development that protects both the environment and the livelihoods of its citizens,” the organistion added.
It urged the government of and concerned authorities to take immediate steps to reopen coal mining legally, responsibly, and transparently, in the interest of public welfare and economic growth.
