SHILLONG, Feb 10: Meghalaya Trinamool Congress president Charles Pyngrope on Tuesday strongly urged the state government to stop denying the existence of illegal coal mining and take immediate, decisive action to eradicate the practice entirely.
His statement comes in the wake of a devastating dynamite explosion at an illegal coal mine in the Mynsngat–Thangsko area of East Jaintia Hills on February 5 that claimed 30 lives.
Describing the tragedy as “deeply unfortunate and entirely avoidable,” Pyngrope observed that the incident has laid bare the persistent continuation of illegal coal mining in the state, contradicting repeated official claims that such activities have been curbed.
He called for strong and urgent measures to prevent further such disasters and loss of young lives. “A large number of young people have lost their lives. This should never have happened. Illegal mining must be totally stopped, and strict action must be taken against those involved,” Pyngrope said.
He stressed that these operations are carried out openly and can no longer be concealed.
The TMC leader pointed to the dynamite explosion as undeniable evidence that illegal coal mining continues unabated, urging the government to accept this reality rather than deny it.
“The whole world knows it is happening. How can anyone deny it? The government must acknowledge the problem and act firmly to stop it,” he added.
Pyngrope expressed deep condolences to the families of the victims, saying his thoughts and prayers are with those who have lost loved ones.
