SHILLONG, Feb 12: The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has expressed its openness to welcoming former Chief Minister Mukul A Sangma into its fold as political activity gathers momentum ahead of the upcoming 2028 Meghalaya Assembly elections.
Responding to a direct query on whether the NCP would consider inducting former Chief Minister, senior party leader and former Kharkutta MLA, Omillo K Sangma said the party would welcome the veteran leader if he chooses to join.
“We are open to leaders who are willing to work for the development and progress of Meghalaya. If Mukul Sangma decides to join the NCP, he will be welcomed,” Sangma told reporters.
He said the party is currently focused on strengthening its organisational base across the state by bringing in experienced and credible leaders who can contribute meaningfully to governance and policy-making.
According to him, the NCP is in the process of expanding its grassroots network and consolidating support in various constituencies in preparation for the electoral battle ahead.
Highlighting the party’s strategy, Omillo Sangma stated that the NCP’s doors remain open to leaders from other political parties who share its vision for inclusive development and good governance. He stressed that the party aims to build a broad-based platform capable of addressing key issues affecting the people of Meghalaya.
At the same time, he underscored that the outcome of the Assembly elections would ultimately depend on the will of the electorate.
“The final verdict rests with the people. Our task is to present a credible alternative and earn their trust,” he said.
So far, the former Chief Minister who is the Parliamentary Party (PP) leader of the TMC has yet to indicate on this political move.
Dr Sangma however has outrightly rejected of planning to return to the Congress. There are reports. Earlier, there are also reports that he was eager to join the BJP. But the former Chief Minister had also rubbishes this report.
