MAWKYRWAT, Feb 14: South West Khasi Hills District Magistrate B. Mawlong has indefinitely prohibited the illegal transportation of fish from Bangladesh to Meghalaya through the district.
The administration issued the directive following reports of unauthorised fish transportation and the movement of suspected illegal migrants from across the border.
In a statement, the district magistrate noted that such activities pose a “serious threat to national security, public order, public health and economic interest”.
To curb these violations, the order bans the transportation, storage, sale or distribution of fish imported illegally from Bangladesh without valid documents.
It further prohibits the use of any vehicle, vessel or boat for such purposes, as well as assisting or harbouring individuals or groups involved in these operations.
The district magistrate observed that such actions are likely to facilitate smuggling, unlawful trade and violations of current laws.
