New Delhi, Feb 17: Indian legends Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev are among 14 former international cricket captains who have written to the Pakistan government expressing concern over the reported health condition and imprisonment of former Pakistan skipper and ex-Prime Minister Imran Khan.
The letter, titled “Appeal by former International Cricket Captains,” urges authorities to ensure adequate medical care, humane detention conditions and fair legal access for the 73-year-old, who is currently lodged in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail. Reports have claimed that Khan has suffered significant vision loss in his right eye while in custody.
The appeal has also been signed by Michael Atherton, Allan Border, Greg Chappell, Ian Chappell, Clive Lloyd, Steve Waugh and several other former captains. Sourav Ganguly, though not a signatory, backed the move, saying Khan deserves proper care for his contributions to Pakistan as both World Cup-winning captain and Prime Minister.The group called for medical attention from specialists of Khan’s choice, dignified treatment in line with international standards and transparent legal processes, stressing that the appeal was made in the spirit of sportsmanship and humanity.
Emphasising that their plea was rooted in shared cricketing values rather than political alignment, the former captains said respect for a sporting icon must transcend borders and rivalries. They maintained that basic human dignity and proper medical care are non-negotiable. (PTI)
