ICC Men’s T20 World Cup
Pallekele, Feb 22: England leg-spinner Adil Rashid has moved into joint fifth place on the all-time wicket-takers’ chart in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, overtaking Sri Lankan great Lasith Malinga in the process.
Rashid achieved the milestone during England’s match against Sri Lanka, returning figures of 2 for 13 in 3.4 overs. The performance took his overall tally in T20 World Cups to 39 wickets from 35 matches since his debut in 2009. He averages 22.66 in the tournament, with best figures of 4 for 2, and has claimed two four-wicket hauls.
Malinga, who represented Sri Lanka in T20 World Cups between 2007 and 2014, finished with 38 wickets from 31 matches at an average of 20.07, including one five-wicket haul.
In the ongoing edition, Rashid has continued his steady rise, picking up eight wickets in five matches at an average of 18.75, with best figures of 3 for 36.
The 38-year-old has also reached another significant landmark in T20 internationals. Rashid is now joint fourth on the all-time T20I wicket-takers’ list alongside Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman. Both bowlers have 158 wickets, with Rashid achieving the mark in 126 matches at an average of 20.96. His best T20I figures stand at 6 for 10, and he has registered three four-wicket hauls and two five-wicket hauls in the format.
The top three wicket-takers in T20I history are Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan with 193 wickets in 115 matches, New Zealand seamer Tim Southee with 164 wickets in 126 games, and fellow Kiwi spinner Ish Sodhi, who has 162 wickets from 138 matches. (Agencies)
