JOWAI, Feb 24: The Special Judge (POCSO), West Jaintia Hills, P Syngkon, on Tuesday convicted one Duh Timung for sexually assaulting his minor stepdaughter and sentenced him to a total of 12 years of rigorous imprisonment.
Timung, a resident of Barato village, was found guilty under the POCSO Act and Section 506 of the IPC (criminal intimidation). The court awarded him 10-year rigorous imprisonment with a fine of Rs 10,000 for the sexual assault and an additional two years of rigorous imprisonment with a fine of Rs 25,000 for threatening the victim. It may be mentioned that the case dates back to September 2018, when an FIR was filed alleging that Timung had assaulted the 11-year-old girl on two occasions. He had also intimidated the child, threatening her with physical harm if she disclosed the abuse.
The accused evaded arrest for nearly a year before being apprehended in September 2019. Following an investigation by WPSI, I. Kharpran, a charge sheet was filed, leading to the trial and subsequent conviction.
